how do I certified a translated document?

Question by marie h: how do I certified a translated document?
I took 2 years of English-Spanish translation in college. Im currently filling out all the paperwork for immigration in the US since I got married to a US citizen and I can apply for my green card now.
In the instruction says: “any foreign language document must be accompained by a full English translation that the translator has certified as complete and correct and by the translator’s certification that he or she is competent to translate the foreign language into English”
I called the immigartion office and they said I can translate my birth certificate from Spanish to English.

I translated it already, now what about the certification????? how do I do that?
thanks.

How many aristocrats in Brussels spoke spanish in the 19th century?

Question by Fufu: How many aristocrats in Brussels spoke spanish in the 19th century?
Are there still some aristocratic families that speak spanish today? If not, when did spanish die out as a mother tongue among aristocrats in Brussels? I’m not talking here about Spanish immigrants to Belgium during the 20th century or Spanish eurocrats. I’m talking about aristocratic families that had adopted spanish during the Spanish rule of Brussels.

Best answer:

Answer by skipper747
The Spanish rule goes back to the days of Charles V and Philip II -
That is the 1500-1650 era -
No aristocrats would adopt Spanish language in Brussels back then -
There were governors sent to the Spanish Low Countries -
The aristocracy around Brussels then, was using Flemish or French -
Remember that era was start of Reformation (Catholic vs Protestants) -

In the XIXth Century there was nothing “Spanish” left in Belgium -
In the 1700s, Belgium area was mostly under Austrian control -
French territory 1790-1815, Dutch 1515-1830, then Independance 1830 -

Suggest you read about the Spanish Low Countries – Wikipedia -

Is watching movies with Spanish audio track & English subtitles a good way to supplement learning Spanish?

Question by lal: Is watching movies with Spanish audio track & English subtitles a good way to supplement learning Spanish?
I’m currently trying to learn Spanish using Rosetta stone software. I am considering supplementing this by watching DVDs with Spanish audio track and English subtitles.
Also, would it be better to use Spanish subtitles?
I don’t know Spanish very well so I intended on doing like Disney movies.

Best answer:

Answer by sxg l
Depends on the complexity of the movies and how much Spanish you already know. If you dont know much then you’ll want to watch toddler movies. If you know a lot then take a try at adult movies but remember that they will use slang that Rosetta stone probably doesn’t cover. Such as swear words or words similar to how we say “dude”, or “su”, etc. So that could really mess you up in the end

Q&A: What percentage of Spanish blood do Mexicans usually have?

Question by Valhalla: What percentage of Spanish blood do Mexicans usually have?
This isn’t meant to be racist or anything. I see many people of Mexican descent claiming to be Spanish, when they are not closely related to Spaniards in terms of family (no Spanish relatives.) I wonder, what percentage of Spanish blood do Mexicans/ people of Mexican descent today typically have? Is it normal that they call themselves Spanish?
@Elvis many Mexicans also claim they’re more European and it seems to make them feel better about themselves, when they’re still Mexican and not European?

Would any Spanish/Fluent speakers like to translate some things from English to Spanish?

Question by Freddie Mercury: Would any Spanish/Fluent speakers like to translate some things from English to Spanish?
Here is my paragraph that I would like to have translated from English to Spanish. The best translation will be chosen as the best answer. Muchas Gracias!

I enjoy riding my bike in the park. I also like to play basketball and baseball. I enjoy these activities because they are good exercise and I enjoy fresh air while being outdoors. Activities I don’t like to do would be American Football and Wrestling. I don’t like these activities because I don’t want to get seriously hurt.

Q&A: Is it impossible to learn Spanish and Mandarin at the same time?

Question by Roger: Is it impossible to learn Spanish and Mandarin at the same time?
I only have three years of school, and this year I wasted trying to learn French (a quickly made decision I have regretted). But I’ve always wanted to learn Mandarin, because of my fascination with chinese culture. But my dad says that I should learn Spanish because it’s so widely spoken. Plus, I want to learn it as well. I can learn two languages; would it be nigh impossible to learn both of these languages?
“?” I meant I only had three years of highschool left.

Best answer:

Answer by Trilingual Nena
I would say that the main danger would be that your focus on Mandarin could take you away from focusing on Spanish, and then you might lose Spanish after a while. Linguists have documented that a person’s proficiency in a language they learned as an adult can suffer if they don’t get continued exposure to that language. In a talk that I heard at a semi-recent conference in linguistics, a researcher who studied what happened to language learners after they stopped getting exposure to the language discovered that, if people reach a certain level of language proficiency they are not likely to lose the language completely, but if they don’t reach that level then they can lose the language almost completely without exposure to it. In other words, if you don’t reach a certain level of proficiency in Spanish (I believe it’s high-intermediate level) and then stop learning Spanish because you are focusing on Mandarin, there is a danger that you could lose some of your Spanish knowledge. So I would say, if you are trying to do two languages at a time, just make sure that you are still working on Spanish stuff while you are working on Mandarin.

It is pretty well-documented that the new language will always be affected by the previous one, so that means that you can expect your Mandarin to be affected by Spanish if you follow your plan. However, I don’t think that there is any reason to believe that starting Mandarin ‘too soon’ would have any effect on the quality of your language in either Spanish or Mandarin that would be any different from the quality of your langauges if you waited a while.

How do I get better at Spanish learning?

Question by David: How do I get better at Spanish learning?
I’m a smart kid with straight A’s throughout the high school.
I just suck at learning Spanish because of its different tenses with different kinds of conjugations.
There is also adjective and number agreements, funky pronunciation with accent on it, etc.
Anyway, there is pretty much no native Spanish speaker around my neighborhood and in my school (I live in upstate New York).
What should I do, especially in term of verb conjugation? I just hate verb conjugation because it’s pain in the butt!

Best answer:

Answer by CS88
Take some online course that should help you with all of the verb conjugation

Where is the best and safest place to learn Spanish as a gay woman, Nicaragua or Guatemala?

Question by Sandy: Where is the best and safest place to learn Spanish as a gay woman, Nicaragua or Guatemala?
I’m planning to travel abroad to learn Spanish for 4 weeks and I’m not exactly the most feminine chick around, so I want to make sure that my gayness isn’t going to make me a target. I just want to make sure I’m safe in my travels.

Best answer:

Answer by The “L” Word
Neither.

Nicaragua is very unsafe to visit. Guatemala is also going through a lot of street crimes as gangs are now a common sight. For some time there were many women being beheaded by some wacko in the capital.

I would go to Costa Rica, Panama, or Colombia. Costa Rican Spanish is very good and Colombian Spanish is one of the most purest forms still left (especially in Bogota). I am not Colombian, but those would be my three choices in the Central America/northern South America region.
